Fire does not discriminate. It will blaze and can cause a significant amount of damage in any home. The leading causes of fire in homes according to The National Safety Council are cooking and heating. Luckily, there are safe ways to prevent a fire from starting in your home.

Here are some preventative tips:

  • Do not leave a stovetop unattended. Stay in the kitchen when cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop.
  • Do not cover any space heaters/heating systems in your home.
  • Consider switching to flameless candles.
  • Enforce a “no-smoking” rule in the house.
  • Keep electronic devices unplugged when they are not in use.
  • Frequently check chords and replace any that are frayed.

In the event a fire does break out in your home, it is important to act quickly. Check out our other blog post “Fire Damage: Who to call when the smoke clears” or our Fire Damage and Restoration page for more info.
