There are a few major scams affecting our area that we want you to be aware of; the IRS scam, where the caller demands money paid or you will be arrested; the Utility scam which advises the victim they are past due and also demands immediate payment usually via a pre- paid card and the Grandparent scam where the caller pretends to be a grandson or granddaughter in an emergency situation also needing money. The following are a few tips to avoid becoming a victim to one of these or other scams.

  • Never give out confidential information such as social security numbers, pin numbers, or passwords.
  • Ask the person on the other end for their credentials and know whom you are talking to.
  • Never make a payment unless you are sure of the recipient.
  • Check credit card, bank statements and your credit report regularly for accuracy or unauthorized purchases.
  • Learn about current scams and report-attempted scams to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov.
