Water Damage from Hurricanes

9/27/2022 (Permalink)

It is September 27th,2022 and currently there is a hurricane named Ian is making its way to the United States with its path set on Tampa Florida.

Forcasters are saying it could strengthen to a category 4 on as it travels north.  Landfall is expected late this Wednesday into early Thursday morning.

Floridians are being put on high alert and making numerous evacuation plans for residents since early in the week.

Counties along the west coast are preparing for the worst. Forecasters expect the storm to intensify as it travels its way north from Cuba targeting the west coast of Florida.

The surrounding towns will experience high winds, heavy rain, damaging storm surge and a rise in ocean water over normally dry land along with widespread power outages. Major flooding is expected.

SERVPRO will be ready and prepared to help residents and businesses hit by these damaging storm effects.

By isolating the area where damage has occurred and controlling the temperature and humidity with our specialized equipment, we can make the water move from any saturated structure and dry faster. Science and experience are our superpowers.

What Is Hiding In Your Crawlspace?

8/20/2021 (Permalink)

How many homeowners do you think do routine checks on their crawlspace? I know the answer- not many!

We have had many customers that had no idea what was brewing below.  But at some point, it begins to become obvious like when our customer from Beach Haven West was called by their neighbor letting them know water was pouring out of the flood vents. Or when a Barnegat homeowner was surprised by her extremely high-water usage, turns out she had a water line running in her crawlspace for weeks. Can you imagine getting a call like that? A lot of our Long Beach Island residents are only here on the weekends and not so lucky to be alerted by anyone but by the odor that starts to creep up into their home.  Depending on the conditions of a crawlspace, water can drain enough in the soil or be soaked up by insulation to hide itself but when the odor starts, that means the mold has too.

We know a crawlspace is not a space anyone wants to enter, but you at least can peek in or have someone check it for you periodically, and keep an eye on your water usage. These simple steps can help prevent a bigger problem.

Call SERVPRO of Manahawkin and speak with one of our representatives about crawlspace maintenance at 609-549-0379.

Water Damage Tips from SERVPRO of Manahawkin Water Damage Tips from SERVPRO of Manahawkin

Imagine coming home to a room full of water from an unexpected leak. Emergencies like this are always unexpected, they can happen anywhere and at any time. The best way to handle emergency situations is to be prepared.

  1. Be Safe

Turn off all power to rooms that are affected and avoid turning on any lights or electrical appliances in the affected rooms. Water and electricity do not mix.

Look before you walk. Floors and ceilings can become soft and unstable with water damage.

  1. Know Where Your Water Supply Is

There is normally a main valve controlling your water flow into your home. Shut that off as soon as possible to stop water from entering the house.

  1. Know Who to Call

Make sure you have contact information for your plumber and local water restoration company so you can get help immediately. The sooner you call a restoration company, the quicker your family is back at home safe and comfortable.

If your Stafford Township home is flooded, call SERVPRO of Manahawkin for restoration help. We provide restoration services to all Southern Ocean County and are available 24/7. Call us at (609) 549-0379 for more information.

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Helps Fix Water Damage from Leaky Pipe SERVPRO of Manahawkin Helps Fix Water Damage from Leaky Pipe

Imagine getting a call from the local police department, informing you they had to shut off the water at the street because your house was flooding. Maryanne got this very call informing her that her Barnegat vacation home had suffered a pipe break in the kitchen. Maryanne lives two hours away and could not get there until the following day.  She called SERVPRO of Manahawkin not knowing what is supposed to happen next. We explained the restoration process to her over the phone and told her our main goal right now was to get her home stabilized. Luckily, we were able to access the house with a garage code and were on site within the hour.  Our team managed to get the situation under control and communicated with Maryanne every step of the way.  Maryanne arrived the following day and met with our Production Manager. He again went over the next steps of the restoration process.  In order to have effective drying and prevent mold growth, we had to remove all wet materials and set drying equipment that would run for at least three days.  Maryanne was very happy that her unfortunate situation was completely under control.

Fast Response is Critical for Flood Cleanup

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Flood Cleanup SERVPRO of Manahawkin Flood Cleanup

A flood in your home can come unexpectedly and cause serious damage. The best advice we can offer is to act quickly. Flood clean-up should begin immediately. Water on the loose tends to travel, often far from its source, wicking and absorbing into everything that will accept it. flooring, cabinets, drywall and given enough time, anything in its path. Waiting leads to secondary damages such as compromised building materials, odors and in some cases, mold.

We’ve mentioned in our “Mold Season is Coming” blog post that some types of mold are irritants, that may contribute to health issues.  Unattended damage from unwanted water sources is a prime contributor to mold growth in our area.

Addressing water damage immediately not only prevents mold growth, but also limits the damage caused to your home and belongings. The less time water has to absorb into materials, the easier and less expensive it will be to dry, clean and repair. In some cases, the differences can mean days or months to get back to normal. Immediate action also provides for a better chance of restoring personal items of sentimental value that cannot be replaced.

If your home has suffered a flood of any size, call SERVPRO of Manahawkin at (609) 549-0379. We offer a 24/7 emergency service and can answer immediately to assess and restore the damage as quickly as possible.

Knowing the Category's of Destruction

5/19/2019 (Permalink)

When SERVPRO of Manahawkin deals with any type of water damage, our restoration team is trained to identify the type of water damage that is present by categorizing them into specific groups according to the universal standards set by the IICRC. If you are experiencing water damage, it is important you know and understand these categories too. As this will assist you in understanding the plan-of-action for the restoration and repair process. Here are the following categories and their definitions according to the IICRC:

Category 1. This is liquid from a clean and sanitary source, such as faucets, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, etc. But, category one can quickly degrade into category two.

Category 2. This category of liquid used to be called grey water, and is described as having a level of contaminates that may cause illness or discomfort if ingested. Sources include dishwasher or washing machine overflows, flush from sink drains, and toilet overflow with some urine but not feces.

Category 3. This is the worst classification and is grossly unsanitary. It could cause severe illness or death if ingested. It used to be called black water, and sources include sewer backup, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant liquid that has begun to support bacterial growth.

Luckily, were able to access the house with a garage code and was on site within the hour.  Our team managed to get the situation under control and communicated with Maryanne every step of the way.  Maryanne arrived the following day and met with our Production Manager and he then again went over the next steps of the restoration process.  In order to have effective drying and also prevent mold growth, we had to remove all wet materials and set drying equipment that would run for at least three days.  Maryanne was very happy that her unfortunate situation was completely under control.

Understanding the Different Types of Water Damage

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

When SERVPRO of Manahawkin deals with any type of water damage, our restoration techs are trained to identify the type of water damage that is present in the area by categorizing them into specific groups according to the universal standards set by the IICRC.

Knowing The Process For Restoration

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

Step 1 - Emergency Contact

When you call SERVPRO of Manahawkin, our representative will guide you through several questions that will help the SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals understand your loss and respond to your water emergency more quickly and efficiently. This initial contact is an important part of a fast, effective restoration.

Step 2 - Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

When they arrive, they carefully inspect your property’s water damage, determining the type of water damage and the areas affected. This is a crucial step to creating an effective plan of action that will result in a successful restoration.

Step 3 - Water Removal / Water Extraction

Typically, hundreds or thousands of gallons of water are removed using our powerful pumps and vacuums during the water removal process. The SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals start this process as soon as possible to minimize further damage and to help prevent mold growth.

Step 4 - Drying and Dehumidification

Once the bulk of the water has been removed, SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals use specialized equipment to target the water that’s harder to access. They use less intrusive, scientific drying methods to draw the remaining water and moisture from your property with air movers and dehumidifiers.

Step 5 - Cleaning and Sanitizing

Water damage also affects your belongings, like furniture, clothing, and personal items. SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals can clean restorable items using a number of specialized cleaning techniques. They also sanitize with antimicrobial treatments and remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 6 - Restoration

The last step is restoring your home or business back to its pre-water damage condition. The restoration step can be relatively minor, such as replacing a few drywall panels, or could include major reconstruction, such as rebuilding entire rooms of a home or business.
