Mold: The Fungus Among Us

5/15/2020 (Permalink)

You’ve heard of mold before, but what is it really? What’s commonly referred to as mold, is a fungus, a multicellular plant-like organism. Fungi are encountered everywhere in normal concentrations, indoors and out. In many instances, fungi are not harmful and, in some cases, may even be beneficial. Fungi are used to ripen cheeses providing flavor, mushrooms can be eaten as food and yeasts are a component of fermentation processes that are used in the production of alcoholic beverages and some types of bread. Why do we mention this? Because it’s important to understand that fungi are naturally occurring and part of our ecosystem and not something that shows up unannounced. Mold, even the good kind, can amplify and become a problem for your home and its occupants if there are conditions to support it. In most circumstances, we find that uncontrolled humidity, poor maintenance, and undetected leaks are the primary factors that lead to uncontrolled mold issues. When considering mold mitigation or remediation, it’s critically important to take these factors into account to ensure the long-term success of your project.  Have questions about mold remediation? Check out our Mold Damage tips page at SERVPROmanahawkin.com or call us at 609-549-0379 to talk with a specialist.

SERVPRO of Manahawkin 5 Principles of Restoring Fire Damage SERVPRO of Manahawkin 5 Principles of Restoring Fire Damage

We hold ourselves to the highest standards of fire damage restoration. Our expert’s goal is to restore your smoke-damaged home and belongings to help make the fire "Like it never even happened."

  1. Locate Smoke Residue.

Our restoration team starts with a careful inspection to determine where the fire began, and how far the damage radius extends.

  1. Identify the Type of Smoke Residues.

Residues from fires vary, depending upon what burned and how. A fire can deliver many different types of residues. Properly identifying residues is the first step in developing a cleaning plan.

  1. Identify the Types of Surfaces to be Cleaned.

Identifying the cleaning surface is crucial for understanding the proper cleaning products and procedures to use to restore an item and prevent further damage.

  1. Capture and Remove the Residues.

Smoke residues bond with the surfaces they contact. It requires dry and wet cleaning methods to unlatch these particles from the affected surface.

  1. Properly Dispose of the Residues.

The proper disposal of residues from fire damage helps protect the environment.

If your home or business has suffered from a fire, don’t wait. Call SERVPRO of Manahawkin at 609-549-0379 to speak with our restoration experts today.

Raccoons: Sly Spring Squatters of Ocean County

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Bioremediation after Raccoon Nesting SERVPRO of Manahawkin Bioremediation after Raccoon Nesting

Spring is a time in nature of growth and rebirth. A lot of our furry friends in nature are starting to have their babies.  Raccoons are very adaptable and can make a nest just about anywhere...especially in your attic. Unoccupied, warm and safe, your attic is a perfect environment for raccoons to use as a temporary shelter to have their young.  No big deal you may ask? Look up images of racoon damage on our webpage and you will change your mind. In the process of making their nest, to start, racoons will tear up insulation and items stored in your attic to create the perfect nesting spot. The damage does not end there. Next, while they are nesting, they will defecate and urinate throughout the area creating a huge mess. Finally, after their babies are ready, and in perfect squatter fashion, they will leave. Often the effects of their activity go undetected until it soaks through to the living space!

Unfortunately, the fluids and feces left behind can contain many germs and pathogens that can be hazardous to humans. Addressing this damage requires special equipment and training to decontaminate and restore the environment. SERVPRO of Manahawkin has this capability.

If you discovered an unwanted nest in your home and need help, or just need assistance, call us at 609-549-0379. ¸AQ2

3 Steps to Disinfected Surfaces

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Disinfected Surfaces SERVPRO of Manahawkin Disinfected Surfaces

The idea of removing any traces of germs on common surfaces seems simple enough, right? Well, that depends on whether you disinfected correctly. To accomplish a truly clean surface is a three-step process.

  1. Clean any dirt and debris with a surface cleaner. Do not skip this step. Proper cleaning of the surface first is crucial, otherwise, you'll be wasting disinfectant and money.
  2. Read the label on your disinfectant. Make sure it’s appropriate for what you are trying to accomplish. Choose wisely. Many disinfectants are rated and certified for different surfaces and germs.
  3. Apply the disinfectant to the clean surface according to the label instructions.

In times of uncertainty, many are called upon to do their part. At SERVPRO of Manahawkin, that’s helping our communities be cleaner and safer by cleaning and disinfecting homes, businesses, and shared spaces. Feel secure and call us at 609-549-0379 to talk to an expert.

How We Restore Water Damage

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Techs Assessing Water Damage SERVPRO of Manahawkin Techs Assessing Water Damage

When water damage happens, it is important to act quickly. The best form of action is to call SERVPRO of Manahawkin, a restoration company trained specifically to restore water damaged structure and items. Restoration services are the most time-saving and cost-effective way to get your home back to normal and avoid lengthy repairs. Of course, restoration services require a few key elements to be successful. So, how does the SERVPRO of Manahawkin restoration team restore water damage?

We are superheroes, but not the kind that can bend the universe to our will. We do know some science, however. Specifically, psychrometry; aka air science. Instead of “bending” the air or “bending” the water out of structures in your home after a disaster, we manipulate the environment to enhance drying. By isolating the area where damage has occurred and controlling the temperature and humidity with our specialized equipment, we can make the water move from any saturated structure and dry faster. Science and experience are our superpowers.

If you have experienced water damage in your home, call SERVPRO of Manahawkin at 609-549-0379.

Water Damage Tips from SERVPRO of Manahawkin Water Damage Tips from SERVPRO of Manahawkin

Imagine coming home to a room full of water from an unexpected leak. Emergencies like this are always unexpected, they can happen anywhere and at any time. The best way to handle emergency situations is to be prepared.

  1. Be Safe

Turn off all power to rooms that are affected and avoid turning on any lights or electrical appliances in the affected rooms. Water and electricity do not mix.

Look before you walk. Floors and ceilings can become soft and unstable with water damage.

  1. Know Where Your Water Supply Is

There is normally a main valve controlling your water flow into your home. Shut that off as soon as possible to stop water from entering the house.

  1. Know Who to Call

Make sure you have contact information for your plumber and local water restoration company so you can get help immediately. The sooner you call a restoration company, the quicker your family is back at home safe and comfortable.

If your Stafford Township home is flooded, call SERVPRO of Manahawkin for restoration help. We provide restoration services to all Southern Ocean County and are available 24/7. Call us at (609) 549-0379 for more information.

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Helps Fix Water Damage from Leaky Pipe SERVPRO of Manahawkin Helps Fix Water Damage from Leaky Pipe

Imagine getting a call from the local police department, informing you they had to shut off the water at the street because your house was flooding. Maryanne got this very call informing her that her Barnegat vacation home had suffered a pipe break in the kitchen. Maryanne lives two hours away and could not get there until the following day.  She called SERVPRO of Manahawkin not knowing what is supposed to happen next. We explained the restoration process to her over the phone and told her our main goal right now was to get her home stabilized. Luckily, we were able to access the house with a garage code and were on site within the hour.  Our team managed to get the situation under control and communicated with Maryanne every step of the way.  Maryanne arrived the following day and met with our Production Manager. He again went over the next steps of the restoration process.  In order to have effective drying and prevent mold growth, we had to remove all wet materials and set drying equipment that would run for at least three days.  Maryanne was very happy that her unfortunate situation was completely under control.

Mold Season is Coming

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

Summer is coming to the Jersey Shore and you can be certain that there will be moisture on the east coast. “So, what?” you ask? Frizzy hair is not the only quirk that comes with the high-humidity season. Soon we will be immersed in long, hot days of melted popsicles, musty lawn mowers and possibly, you guessed it, mold growth. Excess humidity and moisture are the number one cause of mold in homes or businesses. Mold, defined by some as allergens and irritants, will definitely defeat the feel-good summer vibe we’ve been waiting all winter for. You may have seen in the media stories about “black mold” and “toxic mold” which are definite buzz kills. These stories can be both alarming and confusing and most likely, do little to help you understand what you may be experiencing in your home.

SERVPRO of Manahawkin is proud to serve our local communities as a resource for facts and suggestions about mold. As remediators, who actually do the work on a regular basis, we are always here to help, and always available to answer any questions you may have.

Fast Response is Critical for Flood Cleanup

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Flood Cleanup SERVPRO of Manahawkin Flood Cleanup

A flood in your home can come unexpectedly and cause serious damage. The best advice we can offer is to act quickly. Flood clean-up should begin immediately. Water on the loose tends to travel, often far from its source, wicking and absorbing into everything that will accept it. flooring, cabinets, drywall and given enough time, anything in its path. Waiting leads to secondary damages such as compromised building materials, odors and in some cases, mold.

We’ve mentioned in our “Mold Season is Coming” blog post that some types of mold are irritants, that may contribute to health issues.  Unattended damage from unwanted water sources is a prime contributor to mold growth in our area.

Addressing water damage immediately not only prevents mold growth, but also limits the damage caused to your home and belongings. The less time water has to absorb into materials, the easier and less expensive it will be to dry, clean and repair. In some cases, the differences can mean days or months to get back to normal. Immediate action also provides for a better chance of restoring personal items of sentimental value that cannot be replaced.

If your home has suffered a flood of any size, call SERVPRO of Manahawkin at (609) 549-0379. We offer a 24/7 emergency service and can answer immediately to assess and restore the damage as quickly as possible.

Does Your Home in Long Beach Island Have A Mold Problem?

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Mold Remediation in Long Beach island SERVPRO of Manahawkin Mold Remediation in Long Beach island

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

When you need Smoke and Soot Cleanup in Ocean County

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Smoke and Soot Cleanup SERVPRO of Manahawkin Smoke and Soot Cleanup

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Manahawkin will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The results of the pretest will provide the basis for cleaning procedures.

Some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Commercial Cleaning and Fire Hazard Awareness SERVPRO of Manahawkin Commercial Cleaning and Fire Hazard Awareness

Everyone loves a local restaurant with delicious food and feel-good service. You could make the most salivating burger in Ocean County, but a kitchen fire will certainly change that flavor.

The high-heat environment of a commercial kitchen requires good air flow and no build up from grease to be safe from fire. Grease laden air generated by grills, fryers and other cooking stations is continually generated and deposited on all surrounding surfaces in this environment. Most kitchens use an exhaust system specifically designed to keep fresh air flowing in and grease laden air flowing out. So, if the system is working and circulating air, what’s the fire hazard?

Buildup of grease in the exhaust system from lack of cleaning.

Regular periodic cleaning of your kitchen exhaust system will prevent kitchen grease fires, contribute to a sanitary environment and help avoid losing the secret family recipe to a fire.

How and What You Should Clean to Stop Emerging Pathogens in your Business

Servpro of Manahawkin is Here to Help SERVPRO of Manahawkin is Here to Help with proactive cleaning for Coronavirus

Viruses in our midst are constantly spreading from person to person with every cough, sneeze and breath we take. While you cannot permanently kill a virus, you can stop spreading them by keeping yourself and your work environment clean. But HOW do you do that? And WHAT do you have to clean to better your odds?

What to Clean...

We won’t tell you that you need do a deep clean scrub of every inch of your office every few hours. We will tell you that commonly used surfaces should be cleaned as often as possible. Think kitchen counters, doorknobs, light switches, coffee pots, etc. Properly cleaning surfaces that are shared with others and used often, will prevent any viruses which are latching onto the surface, from latching onto you.

How to clean...

The idea of removing any traces of germs on common surfaces seems simple enough, right? Well that depends on whether or not you actually disinfected the surface you set out to clean. To accomplish a truly clean surface is a two-step process. First, you must clean any dirt and debris left over with a surface cleaner. Once this is done, you follow-up with a disinfecting cleaner to take care of the germs. We don’t suggest skipping the first step, it is crucial to the disinfectant actually reaching the germs settled on the surface you’re cleaning.

As the #1 choice in cleanup and restoration, we can minimize the spread of germs with a proactive cleaning for your business. Give SERVPRO of Manahawkin a call at (609) 549-0379.

How to Clean Your Home and Office

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

Proper cleaning can help maintain healthy families, employees, and businesses! Viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms are ever-present and can be transmitted around homes and workplaces. You know how it works, your coworker comes in and says their kids came home sick, then suddenly the entire office has a cold. These microorganisms travel by latching to moisture, dust, dirt and all kinds of particles. Luckily, cleaning and disinfecting can slow the process and make it harder for these organisms to spread!

Here are 5 tips for cleaning in your home and office.

1. Regularly Vacuum.

The right equipment will make all the difference! HEPA filtered vacuums are designed to get the ultrafine (really super tiny) particles that traditional vacuums won’t.

2. Regular Dusting and Dust Control.

Not everything can be vacuumed effectively, so you have to get in there!  Behind the soup cans, tops of the cabinets, ceiling fan blades too! Get after that built-up dust and debris that can harbor germs.

3. Remove the Clutter.

Too much stuff is too much stuff. When your house is packed too tight you can lose beneficial airflow and generate pockets of stagnant air and moisture. Tidy up the clutter and let the breeze blow.

4. Use the Proper Cleaning Methods and the Proper Cleaner.

Dirt and grime can creep into tiny nooks and crannies, making surfaces harder to sanitize, especially if you don’t do it right. Remove heavy dirt by vacuuming and washing with your cleaner of choice, then sanitize or disinfect with your favorite solution. Tip: To be sure you are using the right stuff, read the labels.

5. Deep Clean IT.

Time to go where no one has gone before. You know where, behind the refrigerator, behind the bed, in and under the couch. Don’t forget your vents and air filters. Heavy debris can build up in these places. Keep the change but don’t eat the french fries.

6. BONUS TIP: Call SERVPRO of Manahawkin

We know that deep cleaning can be tough and time-consuming. SERVPRO of Manahawkin has the tools and expertise you need to freshen up your living and workspace.

Authentically Botanical Technology

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

Green Products

Customers are always concerned about the products we use while servicing their home whether it be from a loss due to water, fire, mold damage or just general cleaning.

You can rest assured that SERVPRO Industries provides every local franchise with the safest products needed with “Authentically Botanical Technology”.

The products we use are Authentically Botanical, but what does that mean? Let’s explore the meaning behind the term Authentically Botanical and the commitment to our customers to use products that are safe for them as well as the environment.

Customers have asked what do we mean when we say our products are authentically botanical? “Authentic” is defined as not false or copied, genuine, real. “Botanical” means a substance obtained from a plant.

One of the products we use is a disinfectant that was listed as one of the world’s first and is still the ONLY authentically botanical disinfectant technology.

It doesn’t use synthetic active ingredients but contains thyme and other essential oils, that are nonhazardous and sustainable, to kill the germs.

The Ocean County Chapter of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh members were all set to welcome everybody at the 2019 Ocean County Irish Festival this past Saturday, September 7, 2019.

This was the third year of the event taking place at the Manahawkin Lake Park in Manahawkin.

The Ocean County Irish Festival is a family event which will included live music, pipe bands, step dancers, kids activities, food trucks, vendors, and a beer tent.

There were many vendors, entertainment options and most importantly great fun. This is a family event with a great kids playground for the children to enjoy.

Irishman of the Year
The 2019 Irish Festival honored Daniel Coleman as "Irishman of the Year."  Coleman is the co-owner of Caffrey's Tavern in Forked River.  Caffrey's burnt down last year and this great establishment is being rebuilt. Mr. Coleman is the type of person that the Shillelagh's overwhelming voted to be this years recipient.

The Order of The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, Ocean County is a fraternal organization of men of Irish descent, created to promote Irish Heritage.

Tornado Awareness in Ocean County

6/4/2019 (Permalink)

Tornadoes can appear from any direction. Most move from southwest to northeast, or west to east. Some tornadoes have changed direction amid path, or even backtracked. A tornado can double back suddenly, for example, when its bottom is hit by outflow winds from a thunderstorm's core. Tornadoes are not common in our area but as of the past few years the weather conditions have surprised the north east and tornadoes have been reported on the east coast.

That is why having a tornado plan for your home and family in place is a good idea. Based on the type of home you live in you need to know where you can take shelter in a matter of seconds, and practice a family tornado drill at least once a year. Have a pre-determined place to meet after a disaster. Flying objects is the greatest danger in tornadoes; so store protective coverings (e.g., mattress, sleeping bags, thick blankets, etc) in or next to your shelter space, ready to use on a few seconds' notice. When a tornado watch is issued, think about the drill and check to make sure all your safety supplies are handy. Turn on local TV, radio or NOAA Weather Radio and stay alert for warnings. Forget about the old notion of opening windows to equalize pressure; the tornado will blast open the windows for you!

The Ocean County area has plenty of designated storm shelters, know where they are.   You may even take notice in certain stores there are designated areas, learn where there are bathrooms, storage rooms or other interior shelter areas away from windows, and the shortest ways to get there. Most schools, shopping centers, nursing homes, hospitals, sports arenas, stadiums, mobile home communities and offices should have a tornado safety plan in place, with easy-to-read signs posted to direct everyone to a safe, nearby shelter area. Schools and office building managers should regularly run well-coordinated drills.

Let The Professionals Take Care of The Fire Damage

6/2/2019 (Permalink)

After the firefighters leave, homeowners may think the danger has passed and the house is safe and ready to return to, but this is not always the case. After a fire, you don’t only have the worry about fire damage, there will now be water damage as a result of putting the fire out and smoke - soot damage as product of the fire itself. Without the right professionals to handle the job the affected area will never return to normal. The restoration process after a fire is time consuming and requires a good deal of manpower, but do not let this discourage you. SERVPRO of Manahawkin is here to help! Our crew is IICRC certified, in addition to having the resources and experience to help make this process as smooth as possible. If you have any questions regarding our fire, smoke and soot damage restoration protocol, please give us a call at 609-549-0379.

The Leading Cause to Home Fires

6/2/2019 (Permalink)

Question: Do you know the leading cause of fires in the home are in any weather conditions? It just might not be what you think.

Answer: Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly depending on how up-to-speed you are on fire causes), it's cooking. We cook in the house and on our grills outside. So no matter what where you are doing your cooking, kitchen fires are one of the leading causes of fire in the home.  So please, take caution, do not leave the stove unattended, check the oven often, do not let the flame hit any outside walls or wooden surfaces.  Be careful or grease build up.  No matter where you are cooking please for your own safety be careful in the kitchen or where ever you may be cooking.

Knowing the Category's of Destruction

5/19/2019 (Permalink)

When SERVPRO of Manahawkin deals with any type of water damage, our restoration team is trained to identify the type of water damage that is present by categorizing them into specific groups according to the universal standards set by the IICRC. If you are experiencing water damage, it is important you know and understand these categories too. As this will assist you in understanding the plan-of-action for the restoration and repair process. Here are the following categories and their definitions according to the IICRC:

Category 1. This is liquid from a clean and sanitary source, such as faucets, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, etc. But, category one can quickly degrade into category two.

Category 2. This category of liquid used to be called grey water, and is described as having a level of contaminates that may cause illness or discomfort if ingested. Sources include dishwasher or washing machine overflows, flush from sink drains, and toilet overflow with some urine but not feces.

Category 3. This is the worst classification and is grossly unsanitary. It could cause severe illness or death if ingested. It used to be called black water, and sources include sewer backup, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant liquid that has begun to support bacterial growth.

Understanding Bio Hazard Dangers

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

Not everyone understands what situations are classified as Bio Hazard. Many bio hazard situations pose grave health risks to customers as well as the cleanup companies because of the potential exposure to blood borne pathogens. One out of every 24 people has Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and these pathogens can survive in a deceased person for a considerable amount of time – up to 16 days after death, depending on the temperature and surrounding environment. Exposure to blood borne viruses can occur due to direct contact with non-intact skin, accidental injury from biological fragments, inhalation and exposure from splashes of blood or bio fluid to the eyes, nose, or mouth. Considering the health risks, bio remediation specialists must follow stringent employee safety regulations and meticulous decontamination procedures that most cleanup crews are not accustomed to.

Separately, bio hazard situations can lead to hidden dangers that an average property restoration technician might not even consider. For example, in a water damage emergency, floor boards and drywall might be removed because they are visibly warped and unsalvageable. Then the rest of the structure can be dried out. In contrast, blood can seep through grout and in-between floorboards, even through sub flooring. There is no other way to clean the damage but to remove all affected materials – if new wood floors are installed over the blood spill or if tiles are simply wiped down, the remaining bio matter can spread disease, release odors and further damage the property.

Customer Service is Our #1 Goal

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

Imagine getting a call from the local police department, informing you they had to shut off the water off at the street because your house was flooding.  That is the call that Maryanne got informing her that her Barnegat vacation home had suffered a pipe break in the kitchen.  Maryanne lives two hours away and could not get there until the following day.  She called SERVPRO of Manahawkin not knowing what is supposed to happen next.  We  explained the restoration process to her over the phone and told her our main goal right now was to get her home stabilized. Luckily, were able to access the house with a garage code and was on site within the hour.  Our team managed to get the situation under control and communicated with Maryanne every step of the way.  Maryanne arrived the following day and met with our Production Manager and he then again went over the next steps of the restoration process.  In order to have effective drying and also prevent mold growth, we had to remove all wet materials and set drying equipment that would run for at least three days.  Maryanne was very happy that her unfortunate situation was completely under control.

Does Your Home or Business Have A Mold Problem?

3/21/2019 (Permalink)

In Manahawkin or any Southern Ocean County home or business, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Did you know that Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

Does Your Home in Ocean County Have A Mold Problem?

3/19/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can spread quickly.

Did you know that Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors? This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

When you need Smoke and Soot Cleanup in the Manahawkin Area

3/19/2019 (Permalink)

The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Making a Happy Customer

4/20/2018 (Permalink)

Often that call comes in when a homeowner thinks they have a mold problem and they need a professional to evaluate the conditions.  We scheduled an appointment and met with the homeowner.  We didn’t see any major issues that would need our services and gave them a recommendation whereas they could tackle the problem on their own.  Below is a copy of an email we received shortly after our visit from the homeowner.

Hi Chris,

I just wanted to thank you for the insight into our "mold problem". As I was cleaning the baseboards in order to paint them, I noticed that there was what looked like a dark colored dust on the top of them. When I sprayed them with Windex the "dust" seemed to grow. It was the dog hair that magically sprang up and when I wiped it clean it was dark black with a bunch of specks. After our conversation I'm confident that it was the mold attaching itself to that dog hair that was all over the house. I have cleaned every nook and cranny of that house and removed bags of dog hair. I feel so much better knowing that was probably the bulk of the problem...I still think there is some in the closet, but I've cleaned and painted that, and I leave that door open to air it out.

Again, thank you so much for giving me an honest, straight forward answer to my issue. It is very refreshing to know there are still trustworthy, honest people out there. I can't thank you enough.

Signed, Happy Customer

Do You Know If You Have A Mold Problem?

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

This is the question that comes up from our customers more often than not and it seems to be something many people do not have the answer for. At SERVPRO of Manahawkin, we aim to help you during this process, whether its for general knowledge or the remediation process, please give us a call. But for those of you who are interested in gathering some information sooner, please read further to get a better understanding, provided by the Environmental Protection Agency and their knowledge on Mold.

Answer from www.epa.gov/mold/moldbasics.html

Molds are usually not a problem indoors, unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing.

Molds are part of the natural environment.  Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided.  Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air.  Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet.  There are many types of mold, and none of them will grow without water or moisture.

It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors; some mold spores will be found floating through the air and in house dust.  The mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present.  Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by controlling moisture indoors.  If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem.  If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem, most likely, the mold problem will come back.

What is mold?

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

What is mold?

The term “mold” is a colloquial term for a group of filamentous fungi that are common on food or wet materials. This includes the green Penicillium species that produces penicillin, and fungi that spoil our bread, fruit, cheese and crops. Most of these are Ascomycetes that produce a lot of spores.

The majority of the molds that grow on damp building materials are found in the soil and are adapted to grow on a wide variety of materials. Outdoors, molds live in the soil, on plants, and on dead or decaying matter. There are thousands of species of mold and they can be any color. Different mold species are adapted to different moisture conditions ranging from very wet to just damp. Many times, mold can be detected by a musty odor. Live spores act like seeds, forming new mold growths (colonies) under the right conditions. All of us are exposed to a variety of fungal spores daily in the air we breathe, both outdoors and indoors.

Understanding the Different Types of Water Damage

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

When SERVPRO of Manahawkin deals with any type of water damage, our restoration techs are trained to identify the type of water damage that is present in the area by categorizing them into specific groups according to the universal standards set by the IICRC.

Bio-hazard Situations Can Lead to Hidden Dangers

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

Many biohazard situations pose grave health risks to policy holders and cleanup companies because of the potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. One out of every 24 people has Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and these pathogens can survive in a deceased person for a considerable amount of time – up to 16 days after death, depending on the temperature and surrounding environment. Exposure to bloodborne viruses can occur due to direct contact with non-intact skin, accidental injury from biological fragments, inhalation and exposure from splashes of blood or bio fluid to the eyes, nose, or mouth. Considering the health risks, bioremediation specialists must follow stringent employee safety regulations and meticulous decontamination procedures that most cleanup crews are not accustomed to.

Separately, biohazard situations can lead to hidden dangers that an average property restoration technician might not even consider. For example, in a water damage emergency, floor boards and drywall might be removed because they are visibly warped and unsalvageable. Then the rest of the structure can be dried out. In contrast, blood can seep through grout and in-between floorboards, even through subflooring. There is no other way to clean the damage but to remove all affected materials – if new wood floors are installed over the blood spill or if tiles are simply wiped down, the remaining bio matter can spread disease, release odors and further damage the property.

BioHazard Warning!

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

Make Sure You Are Doing it Right:

A reputable company should be able to deliver a detailed report which catalogs every step of the cleanup process. This should include photos of the entire process as well, so the policy holder and adjuster understand why some structural materials needed to be removed, what was disposed, why the employees went through a certain amount of protective equipment, etc. They should also have equipment available to check for non-visible but active biological fluids and other contaminants so that it is certain when an area is considered disinfected.

Knowing The Process For Restoration

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

Step 1 - Emergency Contact

When you call SERVPRO of Manahawkin, our representative will guide you through several questions that will help the SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals understand your loss and respond to your water emergency more quickly and efficiently. This initial contact is an important part of a fast, effective restoration.

Step 2 - Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

When they arrive, they carefully inspect your property’s water damage, determining the type of water damage and the areas affected. This is a crucial step to creating an effective plan of action that will result in a successful restoration.

Step 3 - Water Removal / Water Extraction

Typically, hundreds or thousands of gallons of water are removed using our powerful pumps and vacuums during the water removal process. The SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals start this process as soon as possible to minimize further damage and to help prevent mold growth.

Step 4 - Drying and Dehumidification

Once the bulk of the water has been removed, SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals use specialized equipment to target the water that’s harder to access. They use less intrusive, scientific drying methods to draw the remaining water and moisture from your property with air movers and dehumidifiers.

Step 5 - Cleaning and Sanitizing

Water damage also affects your belongings, like furniture, clothing, and personal items. SERVPRO of Manahawkin Team Professionals can clean restorable items using a number of specialized cleaning techniques. They also sanitize with antimicrobial treatments and remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 6 - Restoration

The last step is restoring your home or business back to its pre-water damage condition. The restoration step can be relatively minor, such as replacing a few drywall panels, or could include major reconstruction, such as rebuilding entire rooms of a home or business.

Don't Forget To Clean The Walls and Ceiling

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

A common misconception with general cleaning is forgetting about ceilings, this follows the standard mindset “out of sight, out of mind”. In addition to ceilings not being given proper attention during general cleaning - maintenance, but walls also do not get enough attention. Your ceilings and walls are exposed to just as much particles or other contaminants that are a result of basic wear and tear of use, and living and operating in the given area. In fact, the extent of this could be worse for walls and ceilings, because these areas go unattended to, for longer duration than flooring. Quick Tip: It is also a smart idea to clean the walls and ceilings before painting so that the primer and paint can adhere properly. Whether you are looking to paint or just get a general cleaning, contact SERVPRO of Manahawkin and we will be happy to assist you.

What To Do Before and During a Severe Storm

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

If your home or business has experienced storm damage and you are unsure on how to actually seek help in this sort of process or you are unsure if you are even covered for such loss, please remain calm. We understand this process may be frightening at first, but there are several professionals that can and will assist you during this process. If you need immediate help, please contact SERVPRO of Manahawkin, by calling 609-549-0379. We are willing to help you through this process, but for general tips and best practices, please follow the outline below provided by United Policy Holders and what they tell their clients during the process of storm aftermath.

What to do before and during a severe storm:

  • If you live on or at the foot of a hillside, place sandbags around the perimeter of your home.
  • Place rolled up towels along the inside of exterior doors to prevent water from getting in.
  • Do your best to keep your gutters clear but stay safe throughout the storm.
  • Move valuables and items up from lower levels and away from doors and windows.
  • Find a copy of your insurance policy.  Check the wording on water damage and the amount of your deductible
  • Use the free UPHelp Home Inventory App to photo document key features of your home that could be damaged (windows, siding, roof and interior) and your possessions.

What to do after the storm:

  • If your home was damaged, focus on creating a scope of everything that was damaged and what it will cost to repair or replace.
  • To keep a clean record and avoid premium increases, don't file a claim until you review your policy and you think your loss will exceed your deductible and be covered.  Read: To claim or not to claim...
  • If the damage was sudden and accidental and triggered by the storm, don't accept a claim denial argument from your insurer or agent that it was due to faulty construction or maintenance.  The insurer cashed your premium checks and insured your property "as is".
  • If you file a claim and your insurer rejects it, make sure you get a clear and detailed explanation of their position.  Read: www.uphelp.org/speakUP.  Claim and coverage disputes are rarely as clear cut as your insurer makes them out to be.
  • The answer to whether your town or city will pay to repair flooding damage to your home is..."it depends."

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

In terms of mold, the scariest subject is "Black Mold" or sometimes referred to as "Toxic Mold". Now when these two combinations are put together, there seems to be a common fear among people and this is mainly due to the misunderstanding and diagnoses of what they actually have. We are here to help, so please do not hesitate and give us a call if you have any questions.

How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?

Since many types of mold can cause reactions, you should contact us regardless of the color or type of mold. We will then arrange a time to come out to your location and conduct a basic evaluation to properly assess the situation, to help you determine a plan-of-action.

At SERVPRO of Manahawkin, we take pride in assisting our community and we want to help ease you through any difficult process; whether is fire, water, storm or mold damage, we are here to help! Because of this, SERVPRO assist all of their franchises to properly answer these questions, so not only are you "the consumer" informed, but this is general knowledge that will protect you.

What’s the Difference?

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold and mold growth. SERVPRO of Manahawkin has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Mold Prevention Tips

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

Mold prevention is ideal, whether you are a homeowner, property manager or operating a business, but many do not know where to start in terms of how to prevent mold; what actually causes mold and the spread of it. Mold can spread in as little as 24-to-48 hours and moisture enables this growth. Therefore if something is wet in your home for more than 24 hours, then you run the risk of mold contamination and growth. The things to consider when preventing mold is preventing water leaks and condensation. Leaks, no matter how small they may seem can increase the risk of mold. If you have any leaks i.e. roof, pipes, taps or other streams of water, you should act quickly and fix the source of these leaks to prevent mold damage. The next thing to consider is preventing condensation. Preventing condensation may seem a bit overwhelming as condensation refers to water vapor in the air landing on cold surfaces and becomes liquid. This can be prevented by keeping rooms warm and installing insulation in addition to potentially insulating the surfaces themselves.

When Fire is Your Neighbor

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), 31,000 reported vacant structure fires accounted for 6% of the 520,100 structure fires. This past weekend SERVPRO of Manahawkin got several calls regarding fire damage or smoke - soot damage from small home fires or the homes surrounding the area near these large house fires. For a specific example this house had a fire that initially began at the house next door, which then spread over to this house. As a result the house’s siding is destroyed and the fire started burning through the roof and upper end of the house, entering the attic. SERVPRO of Manahawkin will begin the restoration process for the damage that was done in the house to ensure the area is safe and smoke - soot damage free.

Smokes Hidden Damage

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

What To Do After A Fire

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

What To Do After A Fire

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

What NOT To Do After A Fire

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your SERVPRO Franchise Professional.

Leave it to the Professionals

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

When the firefighters leave, many think the danger has passed and the house is safe to return to, but this is not always the case. After a fire, you don’t only have the worry about fire damage, there will now be water damage as a result of putting the fire out and smoke - soot damage as product of the fire itself. Fire Safety Tips

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Be sure all units have working smoke detectors.

Smoke detectors are required by law in all dwelling units used for sleeping.  They must be mounted on ceilings or top of the walls and centrally located in the corridor or area leading to each sleeping space.  It is recommended that batteries be replaced on a regular basis.  A good time to replace batteries is during fall and spring time changes.

Be sure all units have working carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.

Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are required by law in all dwelling units used for sleeping.  They must be mounted in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.  Detectors will chirp if batteries are weak and need replacing.  It is recommended that batteries be replaced on a regular basis.  A good time to replace batteries is during fall and spring time changes.

Always address the smell of gas.

Gaseous odors indicate a possible natural gas leak.  If you smell gas, contact PG&E immediately at 1-800-PGE-5000.

Do not allow children to play near radiators or heaters.

To avoid risk injuries & fires, children should not play near or drop things into radiators, heaters or grates- particularly those heaters recessed into walls and floors.

Use flashlights instead of oil lamps or candles.

Flashlights are helpful in emergencies and safer than oil lamps and candles.  Candles and lamps used at other times should be of the low-flame variety, kept away from combustibles and never left unattended.

Keep hallways, stairs and exits clear of bikes, recycling, debris and other trip hazards

Buildings that are not kept in a clean and orderly condition are much more likely to have multiple safety & fire hazards.

Do not overload electrical outlets.

Overloaded electrical outlets are a common fire hazard. Too many devices plugged into one outlet may cause overloading.

Always unseal windows after painting.

New paint can improve a room's appearance, but a sealed window will create a egress hazard in the event of an emergency.

Prepare emergency plans for both fire evacuations & earthquakes.

Map out alternative egress in the event exits are impassable during a fire evacuation.  Reduce injuries during earthquakes by not locating mirrors, shelves, bookcases or top-heavy furniture over or near beds.  Contact the Berkeley Office of Emergency Services at 981-5605 for more preparation & planning information.

Never disable smoke detectors.

The Berkeley Fire Code requires smoke detectors be operable. It is illegal to disable, disarm, or remove smoke detectors.

Don’t smoke in bed.

It is preferable to smoke outdoors.  If smoking is permitted in your building, use adequate and heavy ashtrays, and never smoke in bed.  Extinguish and properly discard all smoking material.

Don’t place items against electrical breakers, over heaters or near furnaces.

Many fires start because of combustible materials placed on top of heaters.  Stay mindful of breakers and heaters that are recessed into walls and floors and never place anything over or against them.

Don’t use furnace or water heater closets for storage.

Storing items near heat producing devices can cause fires.  Nothing should be stored in heater closets.

Don’t use propane or flaming devices indoors.

Propane stoves, torches, charcoal grills and other apparatus must not be used in residential spaces.

Don’t replace 15-amp fuses with higher rated fuses.

Replacing 15amps with higher rated fuses will not provide more power.  This will, however, cause electrical short-circuiting and potential fire hazard.

Do not use heat lamps.

Avoid using heat lamps. Because of their extreme temperatures, heat and Torchiere lamps pose a serious fire hazard and are not recommended in residential spaces.

Space heater safety.

It is best to avoid using space heaters.  But, if they are used, they must be at least 3 feet away from combustibles, unplug when not in use, never used with an extension cord, and should not be used in a bathroom.  “Tip switches” that automatically turn off if the heater tips over are helpful.

Do not run extension or appliance cords under rugs or carpets.

Extension cords may develop wear over time.  A worn or frayed extension cord may present a fire hazard.

Don’t clog plumbing.

Sinks, tubs & toilets must drain & operate completely to maintain health & safety.  Dispose of waste materials in appropriate receptacles.  And don’t flush highly absorbent material down toilets.

Have a designated emergency meeting place

Know what you will do in an emergency, have a designated meeting place for everyone in your household.

In The Event Of Fire Evacuation:

  • Never ignore fire or smoke alarms.
  • Leave the building immediately — do not stop to collect belongings.
  • Do not use elevators. They may lead to the source of the fire.
  • Check door handles by touching lightly with the back of your hand. If they are hot, do not open them & find another way out.
  • When leaving, close doors behind you and pull any fire alarms you may pass.
  • Stay low — beneath the smoke where the air is clearer and safer to breathe.
  • When you are safe outside, get to phone and call 9-1-1.
  • If your clothes catch fire, Stop, Drop and Roll to put them out.
  • Cool burns quickly with water — get medical attention immediately.

It Is Still A New Year

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

We are already three months in to 2018, many of us have already compiled a list of things we wish to accomplish or simply do better than the year before. More often than not, New Year resolutions tend to be goal orientated regarding health and monetary levels, and we have given up already.  So we'll look at something that satisfies both health and monetary... Your Home! Here are 3 things that we believe will not only make you feel better, it will also ease some tension on your pockets:

  1. Streamlining - Sorting through your stuff is an easy and inexpensive way to remove unnecessary clutter within your home. This will not only make you feel better, it will make your house look better; a clean house is a happy house.

  1. Shrink Your Bills - Go Green! Many people tend to think going green is solely based on solar panels, but this is not always the case. You can make the transition by simply cutting down energy use and doing things in a more efficient manner e.g. Install compact fluorescent bulbs and low-flow shower heads.
  1. Weekly Cleanings - Create a system that allows you to perform weekly cleaning around your house. Preventative maintenance goes along way in protecting your investment (house and household products - accessories). Doing this will increase the life of certain things, such as furniture, carpet etc.

The Steps for Water Mitigation

2/6/2018 (Permalink)

Step 1 - Emergency Contact

When you call, our representative will guide you through several questions that will help the SERVPRO of Manahawkin Professionals respond to your water emergency more quickly and efficiently. This initial contact is an important part of a fast, effective restoration.

Step 2 - Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

They carefully inspect your property’s water damage, determining the type of water damage and the areas affected. This is a crucial step to creating an effective plan of action that will result in a successful restoration.

Step 3 - Water Removal / Water Extraction

Typically, hundreds or thousands of gallons of water are removed using our powerful pumps and vacuums during the water removal process. The SERVPRO of Manahawkin Professionals start this process as soon as possible to minimize further damage and to help prevent mold growth.

Step 4 - Drying and Dehumidification

After the bulk of the water has been removed, SERVPRO of Manahawkin Professionals use specialized equipment to target the water that’s harder to access. They use less intrusive, scientific drying methods to draw the remaining water and moisture from your property with air movers and dehumidifiers.

Step 5 - Cleaning and Sanitizing

Water damage also affects your belongings, like furniture, clothing, and personal items. SERVPRO of Manahawkin Professionals can clean restorable items using a number of specialized cleaning techniques.

Does Your Home or Office Have A Mold Problem?

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

Mold Safety Tips

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Manahawkin for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Christmas Tree Safety

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

The most wonderful time of the year is also the most likely time of the year for house fires. A fire hazard may be right in front of you in the form of a well-decorated Christmas tree.

Christmas tree fires can catch fire fast.

A simple spark can turn a dry Christmas tree into a torch in just 12 seconds.

A Christmas tree fire can engulf an entire room in flames in less than 30 seconds.

To keep your season merry, follow these Christmas tree tips:

  • Fresh, watered trees are much less likely to catch fire. When buying a tree, look for branches with vibrant, green needles that don’t come off the branch easily.
  • Make sure your tree is at least three feet from any heat source, like a fireplace, heat vent or candle.
  • Water your tree daily.
  • If you buy an artificial tree, make sure it’s labeled “fire resistant.”

People forget once they go out and cut that tree or buy the tree off the lot, they forget to cut the two inches off the bottom of the tree. That allows the water and kind of everything to soak up through the tree.

It is also recommended that you have working smoke detectors.

Mold Bloom

Mold Happens in Strange Places

If the conditions are right, mold can grow anywhere!

Here's a great picture of mold growth on new lumber. All it takes is air, a little moisture and an organic food source such as wood, paper, leather, drywall etc.. and you have the right recipe for mold growth.

The right conditions can be found anywhere. The most susceptible are areas in your home or business that are infrequently visited or inspected. Attics, crawlspaces, closets, basements, and storage sheds are common problem areas.

Leaks and vapor intrusion are common in these areas and if left unattended, can lead to mold growth.

Call SERVPRO of Manahawkin today if you suspect you have a mold issue. Estimates and Advice are always free!

Starting The New Year Right!

1/3/2017 (Permalink)

Happy New Year!

With entering the new year; 2017, many of us tend to compile a list of things we wish to accomplish or simply do better than the year before. More often than not, New Year resolutions tend to be goal orientated regarding health and monetary levels, so we'll look at something that satisfies both health and monetary...

  2. Shrink Your Bills - Go Green! Many people tend to think going green is solely based on solar panels, but this is not always the case. You can make the transition by simply cutting down energy use and doing things in a more efficient manner e.g. Install compact fluorescent bulbs and low-flow shower heads.
  3. Weekly Cleanings - Create a system that allows you to perform weekly cleaning around your house. Preventative maintenance goes along way in protecting your investment (house and household products - accessories). Doing this will increase the life of certain things, such as furniture, carpet etc.

Beware The Mold Bandits

Who are the mold bandits?
Unscrupulous character selling mold testing and remediation in one package.

Why are they dangerous?
Remediation and evaluation are two different and distinct areas of expertise, requiring different training and experience levels. In the interest of professionalism, integrity and many instances the law, the two should be separated.

Many instances involving mold remediation are simple and have simple solutions, however some are complicated and require the collaboration of multiple experts to properly assess the condition causing the contamination, and most importantly what to do to fix it.

Hiring the bandits can put you at risk, an incorrect assessment and improper remediation can lead to unnecessary work, wasted time and money or worse, re-contamination.

How to protect yourself from the mold bandits:

  1. Call SERVPRO of Manahawkin
SERVPRO of Manahawkin will guide you through the following steps: Hire qualified and independent mold inspector, hygienist or other indoor environmental professional.
  2. Insure their services include a written report that contains the cause of the problem and the appropriate remediation protocol to properly perform the remediation.
  3. Hire a qualified remediator to perform the work in accordance with the protocol outline.
  4. Have your testing company perform a post remediation verification to verify that the remediation was done properly and successful.

Unoccupied House Fires

11/10/2016 (Permalink)

House Fire caused by neighboring house

How can I tell if I have a mold problem?

10/18/2016 (Permalink)

Got Mold?

This is the question that appears more often than not and it seems to be something many people do not have the answer for.

Sandy Van Epilogue

9/23/2016 (Permalink)

The Sandy Van

Today we say farewell to our beloved ’98 Ford Van we have affectionately dubbed the “Sandy Van”. She got her nickname shortly after she appeared on our doorstep late in 2012.

Arriving all the way from Fullerton CA under the direction of SERVPRO of East Fullerton/ Placentia, on her own feet, and alongside much newer vehicles, she immediately began service assisting during Superstorm Sandy cleanup, never missing a beat.

Prior to her service in NJ, Sandy has seen many years of service on the west coast assisting many communities recovering from wildfire and other natural disasters.

Fearing she would not make the return trip to Fullerton, we adopted Sandy, where she continued cleanup service here for more than 3 years assisting our community through Polar Vortex Events, a Derecho, Flooding from Heavy Rains and Nor’easters.

This fall, at the end of her service here, Sandy will be taken to be recycled, but not before a picture is mounted on our wall in her honor. Help us celebrate the retirement of a lady and say farewell to Sandy!

“Mold Removal” vs. Mold Remediation

7/26/2016 (Permalink)

“Mold Removal” vs. Mold Remediation

At SERVPRO of Manahawkin, we take pride in assisting our community and we want to help ease you through any difficult process; whether is fire, water, storm or mold damage, we are here to help! Many of our clients ask us "what's the difference between Mold Removal vs. Mold Remediation?" Because of this, SERVPRO assist all of their franchises to properly answer these questions, so not only are you "the consumer" informed, but this is general knowledge that will protect you.

What Is Black Mold?

Insurance tips for storm damage

Insurance tips for storm damage

Quick Tip: Preventing Mold Within Your Ocean County Home

7/19/2016 (Permalink)

Prevent Mold Within Your Ocean County Home

The classes of destruction.

When SERVPRO of Manahawkin deals with any type of water damage, our restoration techs are trained to identify the type of water damage that is present in the area by categorizing them into specific groups according to the universal standards set by the IICRC.

Why is bioremediation so complex?

7/5/2016 (Permalink)

Biohazard Cleanup

The Water Damage Restoration Process

Step 1 - Emergency Contact

When you call, our representative will guide you through several questions that will help the SERVPRO of Manahawkin Professionals respond to your water emergency more quickly and efficiently. This initial contact is an important part of a fast, effective restoration.

The Basics on Mold

6/29/2016 (Permalink)

What is mold?

Should we worry about dangerous clinging jellyfish at Jersey Shore?

6/29/2016 (Permalink)

Photo of the Clinging Jellyfish

Concerned over a fisherman’s discovery of a rare and unpleasant jellyfish in Barnegat Bay over the weekend, and a possible encounter between the same species and a swimmer in the Shrewsbury River on Wednesday, state officials took to the water to determine the prevalence of clinging jellyfish in New Jersey.

And they came up with nothing.

According to Gary Buchanan with the state Department of Environmental Protection, none of the dime-sized creatures were pulled out of the water during several towing attempts by the department on Thursday.

“They’re not widespread,” Buchanan told New Jersey 101.5.

Clinging jellyfish are native to the Pacific Ocean. It’s not exactly certain how the species could have ended up in New Jersey’s waters, but it’s been suggested they latched themselves on to ships coming from the West Coast.

This week on Facebook, the Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management alerted residents of the presence of clinging jellyfish in the Shrewsbury River. Three unconfirmed jellies were found in the river, where a Middletown man was stung by what was believed to be a clinging jellyfish.

The victim told NBC 4 New York it felt like “every single muscle in my body had a Charlie horse in it.”

Buchanan describes the sting as “potent,” delivering a neurotoxin that can affect muscles and organs.

The good news is you won’t find this species in ocean waters, Buchanan said. Staying true to their name, the clinging jellyfish cling to vegetation found in shallow bay waters.

“Typically, beaches where you have sand bottoms — swimmers don’t have to worry about that,” Buchanan said. “Be cautious if you’re wading in non-beach areas, in the bays.”

Clinging jellyfish typically feed at night on small marine animals, such as zooplankton, according to a DEP fact sheet. It’s an erratic species, meaning it is not often densely populated.

Ocean County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Ocean County Home.

10 Tips for Safe Summer Barbecues

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

Grill Safety Source: (http://www.shopchimney.com/info/sites/default/files/tips.JPG)

Do:

1. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. Farther is even better. This includes portions attached to your house like carports, garages and porches. Grills should not be used underneath wooden overhangs either, as the fire could flare up into the structure above. This applies to both charcoal and gas grills.

2. Clean your grill regularly. If you allow grease and fat to build up on your grill, they provide more fuel for a fire. Grease is a major source of flare ups.

3. Check for gas leaks. You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that's a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough.

4. Keep decorations away from your grill. Decorations like hanging baskets, pillows and umbrellas look pretty AND provide fuel for a fire. To make matters worse, today's decor is mostly made of artificial fibers that burn fast and hot, making this tip even more important.

5. Keep a spray bottle of water handy. That way, if you have a minor flare-up you can spray it with the water to instantly calm it. The bonus of this tip is that water won't harm your food, so dinner won't be ruined!

6. Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT. If you are unsure how to use the extinguisher, don't waste time fiddling with it before calling 911. Firefighters say many fire deaths occur when people try to fight a fire themselves instead of calling for expert help and letting the fire department do its job.

Don't:

7. Turn on the gas while your grill lid is closed. NEVER do this. It causes gas to build up inside your grill, and when you do light it and open it, a fireball can explode in your face. Click here to see our demonstration.

8. Leave a grill unattended. Fires double in size every minute. Plan ahead so that all of your other food prep chores are done and you can focus on grilling.

9. Overload your grill with food. This applies especially fatty meats. The basic reason for this tip is that if too much fat drips on the flames at once, it can cause a large flare-up that could light nearby things on fire.

10. Use a grill indoors. People often think it will be safe to use a grill, especially a small one, indoors. NOT TRUE. In addition to the fire hazard, grills release carbon monoxide, the deadly colorless, odorless gas. That gas needs to vent in fresh air or it can kill you, your family and pets.

Be careful! Without proper training, you could be spreading mold throughout your home.

  • Contact SERVPRO of Manahawkin for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

Does Your Ocean County Home Have A Mold Problem?

6/27/2016 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

Summer Safety Tips: Sun and Water Safety

6/20/2016 (Permalink)

Fun in the Sun

Babies under 6 months:

  • The two main recommendations from the AAP to prevent sunburn are to avoid sun exposure, and to dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. However, when adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents can apply a minimal amount of sunscreen with at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) to small areas, such as the infant's face and the back of the hands. If an infant gets sunburn, apply cool compresses to the affected area. SeeBaby Sunburn Prevention for more information.

For all other children:

  • The first, and best, line of defense against harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is covering up. Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours - between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear a hat with a three-inch brim or a bill facing forward, sunglasses (look for sunglasses that provide 97% -100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays), and clothing with a tight weave.
  • On both sunny and cloudy days use a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or greater that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Be sure to apply enough sunscreen -- about one ounce per sitting for a young adult.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
  • Use extra caution near water and sand (and even snow!) as they reflect UV rays and may result in sunburn more quickly.

Heat Stress in Exercising Children

  • The intensity of activities that last 15 minutes or more should be reduced whenever high heat or humidity reach critical levels.
  • At the beginning of a strenuous exercise program or after traveling to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of outdoor activities should start low and then gradually increase over 7 to 14 days to acclimate to the heat, particularly if it is very humid.
  • Before outdoor physical activities, children should drink freely and should not feel thirsty. During activities less than one hour, water alone is fine. Kids should always have water or a sports drink available and take a break to drink every 20 minutes while active in the heat.
  • Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate evaporation of sweat. Sweat-saturated shirts should be replaced by dry clothing.
  • Practices and games played in the heat should be shortened and there should be more frequent water/hydration breaks. Children should promptly move to cooler environments if they feel dizzy, lightheaded or nauseated.

Heat Stress in Infants

Infants and small children are not able to regulate their body temperature in the same way that adults do. Every year, children die from heat stroke from being left in a hot car, often unintentionally, with the majority of these deaths occurring in children 3 and under.

Here are a few tips for parents when traveling in a car with infants or young children:

  • Always check the back seat to make sure all children are out of the car when you arrive at your destination.
  • Avoid distractions while driving, especially cell phone use.
  • Be especially aware of kids in the car when there is a change from the routine, ie. someone else is driving them in the morning, you take a different route to work or child care.
  • Have your childcare provider call if your child has not arrived within 10 minutes of the expected arrival time.
  • Place you cell phone, bag or purse in the back seat, so you are reminded to check the back seat when you arrive at your destination.
  • The inside of a car can reach dangerous temperatures quickly, even when the outside temperature is not hot. Never leave a child alone in a car, even if you expect to come back soon. Lock your car when it is parked so children cannot get in without supervision. See Prevent Child Deaths in Hot Cars for more information.

Pool Safety

  • Never leave children alone in or near the pool or spa, even for a moment; close supervision by a responsible adult is the best way to prevent drowning in children.
  • Whenever children under age 5 are in or around water, an adult – preferably one who knows how to swim and perform CPR – should be within arm's length, providing "touch supervision."
  • Install a fence at least 4 feet high around all four sides of the pool. The fence should not have openings or protrusions that a young child could use to get over, under, or through.
  • Make sure pool gates open out from the pool, and self-close and self-latch at a height children cannot reach. Consider alarms on the gate to alert you when someone opens the gate. Consider surface wave or underwater alarms as an added layer of protection.
  • The safest fence is one that surrounds all four sides of the pool and completely separates the pool from the house and yard. If the house serves as the fourth side of the fence, install an alarm on the exit door to the yard and the pool. For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing the pool. Drowning victims have also used pet doors to gain access to pools. Keep all of your barriers and alarms in good repair with fresh batteries.
  • Keep rescue equipment (a shepherd's hook – a long pole with a hook on the end — and life preserver) and a portable telephone near the pool. Choose a shepherd's hook and other rescue equipment made of fiberglass or other materials that do not conduct electricity.
  • Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as "floaties." They are not a substitute for approved life vests and can give children and parents a false sense of security.
  • Children over age 1 may be at a lower risk of drowning if they have had some formal swimming instruction. However, there is no evidence that swimming lessons or water survival skills courses can prevent drowning in babies younger than 1 year of age.
  • The decision to enroll a child over age one in swimming lessons should be made by the parent based on the child's developmental readiness and exposure to water, but swim programs should never be seen as "drown proofing" a child of any age.
  • Avoid entrapment: Suction from pool and spa drains can trap a swimmer underwater. Do not use a pool or spa if there are broken or missing drain covers. Ask your pool operator if your pool or spa's drains are compliant with thePool and Spa Safety Act. If you have a swimming pool or spa, ask your pool service representative to update your drains and other suction fitting with anti-entrapment drain covers and other devices or systems. See PoolSafely.gov for more information on the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
  • Large, inflatable, above-ground pools have become increasingly popular for backyard use. Children may fall in if they lean against the soft side of an inflatable pool. Although such pools are often exempt from local pool fencing requirements, it is essential that they be surrounded by an appropriate fence just as a permanent pool would be so that children cannot gain unsupervised access.
  • If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first.
  • Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors.

Boating Safety

  • Children should wear life jackets at all times when on boats, docks or near bodies of water.
  • Make sure the life jacket is the right size for your child. The jacket should not be loose and should always be worn as instructed with all straps belted.
  • Blow-up water wings, toys, rafts and air mattresses should not be used as life jackets or personal flotation devices. Adults should wear life jackets for their own protection, and to set a good example.
  • Adolescents and adults should be warned of the dangers of boating even as a passenger when under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and even some prescription medications.

Open Water Swimming

  • Never swim alone. Even good swimmers need buddies!
  • A lifeguard (or another adult who knows about water rescue) needs to be watching children whenever they are in or near the water. Younger children should be closely supervised while in or near the water – use "touch supervision," keeping no more than an arm's length away.
  • Make sure your child knows never to dive into water except when permitted by an adult who knows the depth of the water and who has checked for underwater objects.
  • Never let your child swim in canals or any fast moving water.
  • Ocean swimming should only be allowed when a lifeguard is on duty.
  • Teach children about rip currents. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until you escape the current, and then swim back to shore.

Tips on how to stay healthy during the summer

6/20/2016 (Permalink)

  1. Stay cool and hydrated. Drink water, at least two to four cups (16-32 ounces) upon rising, and similar amounts if you are going out for activities and exercise. Carry water with you in a hard plastic container (more stable polycarbonate rather than polyethylene that leaches plastic into the water). You may also use a traveling water filter. Check your local water stores or www.realgoods.com. Most people need two to three quarts of liquid per day, and more in hot weather or with sweating and exercise. Review Chapter 1 of Staying Healthy with Nutrition or Chapter 7 of The Staying Healthy Shopper's Guide for further information on Water.
  2. While enjoying the sun and outdoors, protect yourself from overexposure to sunlight by wearing a hat and using natural sunscreens without excessive chemicals. Carry Aloe Vera gel for overexposure and have an aloe plant growing in your home for any kind of burn. The cooling and healing gel inside the leaves will soothe any sunburn. It works great.
  3. Keep up or begin an exercise program. Aerobic activity is important for keeping the heart strong and healthy. If you only work out in a health club, take some time to do outdoor refreshing activities -- hiking, biking, swimming, or tennis. Reconnecting with these activities will help keep your body and mind aligned.
  4. Enjoy Nature's bounty – fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables at their organic best. Consuming foods that are cooling and light -- fresh fruits, vegetable juices, raw vital salads, and lots of water -- will nourish your body for summertime activities. Include some protein with one or two meals. There are a number of light, nourishing proteins that don't require cooking. Most of these complement fruits and vegetables nicely-- nuts, seeds, sprouted beans, soy products, yogurt, kefir, and cottage cheese. Fish and poultry can also be eaten.
  5. Take some special summer time with your family, kids, and friends who share the enjoyment of outdoors. Plan a fun trip if you're able and motivated for a day or longer -- hiking in the wild, camping, playing at the river, or a few days resting at the ocean. Rekindling our Earth connection has benefits that last beyond this season, continuing to enrich the whole of your life.
  6. Relax and breathe. You've been working hard. This is the season to slow the pace a bit and absorb the light that stimulates your hormonal message center. Leave your cell phone at home or take a week off from TV. In many European countries, most of the population has a month off during the summer.
  7. Sun teas are wonderful. Use flowers and leaves (or tea bags) in a clear half- or one-gallon glass jar filled with spring water. Hibiscus or red clover flowers, peppermint, chamomile, or lemon grass are all good choices, or use your local herbs and flowers that you learn are safe, flavorful, and even medicinal. Leave in the sun for two hours or up to a whole day. Moon teas can also be made to enhance your lunar, dreamy side by letting your herbs steep in the cooling, mystical moonlight. Add a little orange or lemon peel, or a sprig of rosemary and a few jasmine flowers.
  8. Nutritional supplements can support you with a greater amount of physical energy, enhancing your summer activities. The B-complex vitamins are calming to the nervous system and helpful for cellular energy production, while vitamin C and the other antioxidants protect your body from stress, chemical pollutants, and the biochemical by-products of exercise. Helpful summer herbs are Siberian ginseng as an energy tonic and stress protector, dong quai is a tonic for women, hawthorn berry is good for the heart, and licorice root will help energy balance and digestion.
  9. Use the summer months to deepen the spiritual awakening begun in the spring. Begin by checking your local bookstore or the web for ideas that interest you. Plan a vacation that incorporates these new interests and provides you time to read, relax, contemplate, and breathe.
  10. Above all, give yourself the time to truly experience Nature. This can happen, even in a city park, if you relax and let in your surroundings. When traveling, take activities for the family and your first aid kit for bites, bee stings, and injuries. Check for ticks after your hikes. Watch for overexposure, take time in the shade, and drink your water.

History of Memorial Day

5/27/2016 (Permalink)

The History of Memorial Day

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers.

During that first national celebration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.

“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”

his event was inspired by local observances of the day that had taken place in several towns throughout America in the three years after the Civil War. In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities observed Memorial Day, and several states had declared it a legal holiday. After World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of America’s wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States.

When Is Memorial Day?

In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be celebrated on the last Monday of May. Several southern states, however, officially celebrate an additional, separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead, sometimes referred to as a Confederate Memorial Day: January 19 in Texas; third Monday in Jan. in Arkansas; fourth Monday in Apr. in Alabama and Mississippi; April 26 in Florida and Georgia; May 10 in North and South Carolina; last Monday in May in Virginia; and June 3 in Louisiana and Tennessee.

Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually.

Housecleaning Tips to Ease Allergies

5/18/2016 (Permalink)

Regular housecleaning can get rid of many allergy triggers and help relieve your symptoms. Here are some ways to keep your house clean and your allergies under control:

  • Vacuum once or twice a week. Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter. Some allergens are so small that they pass right through a regular vacuum filter. That means that every time you vacuum, you could be sucking them off the floor and shooting them into the air, where you breathe them in.
  • Cut clutter. Piles of boxes or clothing can trap dust and hide allergens like dust mites and cockroaches.
  • Keep the bathroom free of mold. Scrub the tile regularly. Don't forget the shower curtain, too. You may be able to toss it in the washing machine.
  • Wash sheets weekly in hot water. Make sure it's at least 130 F. That's hot enough to kill dust mites. If your child has allergies, do the same with any washable stuffed animals.
  • Don't use scented cleaners or detergents. If you have allergies, the fragrances in cleaners can trigger symptoms. Look for fragrance-free products instead.
  • Use a damp cloth and mop when cleaning. They'll trap allergens instead of knocking them into the air.
  • Clean outside entryways. Sweep or vacuum. The cleaner your path or patio is, the less likely someone is to track dust or pollen into your house.
  • Take shoes off before you go in the house. That way pollens or other triggers won’t get tracked in.
  • Keep pets out of the bedroom. It's a key way to protect yourself from dander. Don't ever let pets sleep on the bed if you have pet allergies.
  • Use air-conditioning. Instead of opening windows when it’s hot, use the AC. An air conditioner will filter the air, preventing dust, dirt, pollens, molds, and other triggers from getting in.

For the past ten years, Paint the Town Pink has encouraged every woman, 40 and older, to have her annual mammogram. You can join the mission. Help us encourage women in your community to get their annual mammogram.
To encourage women in our community, aged 40 and older, to have their annual mammogram; to raise money to provide underserved women in our community; and to make a difference in the lives of women in our community.
It takes a village to achieve the mission of Paint the Town Pink, and every year that village has grown with more towns and even more supporters helping to spread the word that “early detection is a woman’s best defense against breast cancer.”
Paint the Town Pink merges a breast cancer prevention, detection and treatment campaign with a fundraising component that raises funds to provide screening mammography to underserved women in our community.
As a member of the community, we have the unique opportunity to integrate an important message into a woman’s daily routine – whether it is in the places she shops and dines; works and lives; or through her community’s schools and community organizations.

SERVPRO® Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List

1/28/2016 (Permalink)

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retains top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

Barnegat, NJ (Grassroots Newswire) January 19, 2016 - SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine.* This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process uses “objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation” to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are “financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system.”

“It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers,” said Christopher Fyrberg, owner of SERVPRO of Manahawkin. “The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer.”

According to Fyrberg, a number of differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

  • SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.

  • SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.

  • SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, “One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees.”

“Today,” Steen continues, “as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support.”

SERVPRO® specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration services, helping both commercial and residential customers recover from property damage emergencies “Like it never even happened.” For more information about SERVPRO® of Manahawkin, contact Christopher Fyrberg at (609)549-0379 or Diane@SERVPROmanahawkin.com.
